After nearly two months of intense fighting, government soldiers successfully pushed foreign-backed militants back from Khirbet Ghazaleh, situated in the Hauran Plain on the highway to Jordan.
Before the unrest in Syria, billions of dollars in goods -- traded between Persian Gulf countries, Turkey and Europe -- had been transported along the highway, which passes Khirbet Ghazaleh before ending at the Nassib border crossing to Jordan.
Army operations have been underway in other parts of the country.
Militants suffered great losses in the western city of al-Qusayr, located in Homs province near Lebanon border. Several terrorists have been killed and their missiles, arms and satellite equipment have been destroyed in the operations.
Considerable gains for Syrian army were also reported in operations near capital Damascus where Syrian soldiers confronted al-Nusra terrorists, killing many of them that made the militants flee from the area.
Syria has been struggling with a US-backed insurgency which began in March 2011 as a protesting movement but turned to be a cover for terrorist groups including al-Qaeda and al-Nusra Front.
