A major rescue operation took place off the Libyan coast on Monday and included the rescue dozens of people travelling on a wooden boat that had departed from Sabratha.
Most of the humanitarian aid organizations currently working in the Search and Rescue zone took part in the operation, as well as Frontex Norway and a Spanish Navy frigate.
Most of the rescued migrants were of Somali or Eritrean origin and had left Libya the previous night.
The Italian Coast Guard said it coordinated a total of 39 rescues on Monday in the sea, about 48 kilometers (30 miles) north of Tripoli, with 6,055 migrants rescued in a single day.
Nine bodies were recovered. Smugglers took advantage of the first day of calm seas after days of rough waters to launch vessels crowded with migrants, who pay them in the hope of reaching European shores.
