The Syrian army engaged in fierce battles with Takfiri militants in the vicinity of Marj al-Sultan in Eastern Ghouta in Damascus countryside, according to the Arabic-language al-Alam news channel.
Clashes also erupted between the army and the terrorists in Jobar neighborhood East of Damascus.
Field sources said a large group of terrorists were killed and injured in the clashes.
However, there are no immediate reports of the exact number of the dead terrorists.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Syrian army thwarted a terrorist attack in Eastern Ghouta in Damascus province and killed a group of militants, including senior commanders.
The Syrian army targeted terrorists' position in al-Nashabiya farms while the militants were gathering to launch an attack in Eastern Ghouta in Damascus countryside, field sources said.
The army killed Said Omar Khabia, aka al-Shabah (The Ghost), and four field commanders in the Syrian forces' assault, the sources added.
A group of militants from "Ashbal Jaish al-Islam", "Der' Al-Asema Brigade", "Ajnad al-Sham" and "Jaish al-Islam" were also killed in the army raid.
Two Saudi militants were identified among the dead terrorists.
On Saturday, the Syrian Army announced that the militant groups have sustained heavy losses as a result of the government forces' attack and have retreated from more lands in the strategic region of Marj al-Sultan East of Damascus province.
"The pro-government forces' continued attacks left no chance for the militant groups to fortify their positions which have been attacked and bombed regularly in the recent days by the Syrian ground and air forces," the army said.
"The militant groups were forced to leave behind their military equipment and pull back the remaining of forces in a bid to evade more casualties," the army further added.
Marj al-Sultan region is home to one of the most important airbases in Central Syria with the same name, therefor, the government forces have done their best in the recent weeks to restore full security to the region which can be considered as a Central command in anti-terrorism campaign.
On November 12, the Syrian army and popular forces completely pushed back the militant groups from Marj al-Sultan Airbase and its surroundings, scoring their second groundbreaking victory after lifting the ISIL siege of Kuweires airbase in Aleppo province a few days earlier.
Syrian army forces entered Marj al-Sultan military airbase in Eastern Ghouta on November 10, and brought the base under full control two days later; FNA reported.
