Jordan has called for an emergency Arab League meeting to discuss recent Israeli attacks on the al-Aqsa Mosque and the arrest of one of the top Muslim cleric in al-Quds (Jerusalem).

The appeal was made by Jordan's representative on Thursday, referring the Israeli aggressions at al-Aqsa Mosque which is revered by Muslims as the third holiest shrine in Islam.

Israeli forces attacked prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque and abducted two Palestinians on Tuesday. The prayers were “harshly beaten and dragged on the ground” by the Zionist forces, according to the witnesses.

The Jordanian petition also mentioned the Tuesday arrest of al-Quds's Mufti Mohammed Hussein by Israeli forces at his home. The sheikh was released later after several hours of questioning.

The incident sparked anger across the Muslim World and led to an attempt by protestors to storm the Israeli embassy in Jordan capital, Amman, late Wednesday, triggering a crackdown by anti-riot police forces in Jordan.

Earlier on Wednesday, acting Jordanian Foreign Minister and Interior Minister Hussein Majali summoned the Israeli ambassador in Jordan David Nero to protest the incident, holding Israel responsible for preventing "provocative acts" such as Tuesday's clashes.

The Jordanian parliament on Wednesday passed a motion demanding the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador and the withdrawal of the Jordanian ambassador in Tel Aviv in response to the arrest and "wanton aggression" against al-Aqsa.

Jordanian lawmakers angrily denounced the arrest as "a flagrant violation of all international conventions and treaties and ... religious freedoms," urging the UN Security Council to take action.

Addressing a parliament session, Jordan's Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour said instructions would be issued to the Jordanian embassy in Tel Aviv "to take all measures to respond to this rejected and condemned crime."
