Russia raps West for boosting extremism in Syria

Russia has lashed out at the so-called “Friends of Syria” meeting in Rome for deciding to help foreign-backed terrorists in their attempt to seek overthrow of popular government of President Bashar al Assad.

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman issued a statement on Friday stressing that terrorists’ attempts to topple President Assad would inevitably cause suffering among civilians in Syria.

"Decisions taken in Rome, as well as declarations voiced there, in letter and spirit directly encourage extremists to (seek) the seizure of power by force," Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement.

After the so-called "Friends of Syria" meeting on Thursday, the United States said it would give aid directly to terrorists for the first time and would more than double its support to Syria's opposition.

Meanwhile, the vice-president of the so-called “Syrian National Opposition Coalition”, Riad Seif, said after the Rome meeting that “we are looking forward to receiving ‘high grade’ political, humanitarian, and military assistance”, Al Alam News Network reported.

The countries participating in Thursday meeting pledged to increase their political and financial supports for the coalition.

The West and its regional allies, especially “Saudi Arabia”, “Qatar”, and “Turkey” have been giving all-out support to Syria’s armed opposition and terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda-affiliated “Al-Nosrah Front”, which as a result has caused widespread death and displacement of a significant number of Syrian people.

Nevertheless, the participants in the Rome conference demanded in a statement that weaponry aid to the Syrian government must immediately stop.

The U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, claimed in the summit that the 60-million dollar aid to Syrian armed opposition and other terror groups does not include lethal weapons.

The international conference of the so-called “Friends of Syria” was held in Rome on Thursday, with attendance of the country’s opponents and representatives from some Western countries and their regional allies. According to the organizers, the objective of the summit was to investigate ways to cease Syria crisis, and to explore suggestions regarding ways to assist Syrian armed opposition.
