“Iran does not consider U.S. talks as redline”

Iran Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani says having dialogue with the U.S. is not the Islamic Republic’s redline, stressing that the U.S. should help the negotiations to progress instead of taking a destructive position.

Larijani was speaking to Al Alam News Network in an exclusive interview on Monday afternoon.

“Could someone expect that Iran and the U.S. launch direct negotiations during new presidential term in the U.S.”?, this was the question to which Larijani answered: “The point that whether new developments in the U.S. could show a new position or not has been brought up in some journalistic analyses”.

“But, what we could comment on, is the U.S. authorities’ behaviours”, we should wait and see what steps the U.S. authorities take [in the future]”, according to Larijani.

“To answer the question whether it is a red line for Iran to talk to the U.S., no it’s not, we have not said such things”, Larijani went on to say.

The Parliament Speaker referred to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s remarks in northeastern city of Mashhad a few years ago, in which he had said that “we review the U.S. behaviours”. So, we should see what behaviour the U.S. president shows in his new term, according to Larijani.

Larijani described the U.S. behaviour in the so-called G5+1 as a sign for those who want to be assured of this issue. He called on them to help the talks to make progress instead of taking a destructive stand.

On the question of western reports about contacts and unofficial relations between Iran and the U.S., Larijani said recently there have been no such things, but we have had talks over Iraq [U.S. military’s presence], and those talks were transparent and had an explicit definition.
