UN Special Envoy for Iraq Jan Kubis told the Security Council that evidence of the "heinous crimes" committed by the terrorists in Iraq were being uncovered as territory is retaken from ISIL.
"More than 50 mass graves have been discovered so far in several regions of Iraq," he said.
Kubis announced that three graves containing a total of up to 40 sets of remains were found in a football field in the city of Ramadi in Anbar province on April 19.
Ramadi was liberated in December, almost one year after it fell into the hands of ISIL (Islamic State , ISIS IS and Daesh).
Thousands of displaces families who had left their homes in the Western Iraqi city of Ramadi have returned home after the city was retaken from ISIL militants.
