Four policemen were killed on Tuesday in an exchange of fire with wanted men in a central Jordanian province where assailants had killed 10 people in a series of ambushes earlier this week, a Jordanian government spokesman said.

Mohammed Momani told reporters Tuesday night that one fugitive was killed and one wounded.

Police officers came under fire during a raid of a suspected hideout, Momani said, when an unknown number of assailants fired upon security forces from the rooftop of a building with automatic machine guns.

Momani said Jordanian security forces had been following up on links to Sunday's shooting at Karak Castle, which killed nine Jordanians and a tourist from Canada.

Earlier on Tuesday, the extremist Islamic State group (ISIS) claimed responsibility for Sunday's Attack.
