Seven members of the security forces, two local civilians and a tourist from Canada were killed when gunmen assaulted Jordanian police in a series of attacks. At least 34 people, including two foreign nationals, were wounded.

The security operation at a castle popular with tourists in Jordan, which was assaulted by gunmen, has ended according to a government spokesperson's office.

The statement late on Sunday said that at least four gunmen were killed and that troops continued to search the area around Karak Castle.

It also said large amounts of weapons had been seized. A high security presence was visible in the area early on Monday and some locals condemned the attack.

At least 34 people, including two foreign nationals, were wounded. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks in and near Karak.

The Canadian Embassy in Amman issued an alert warning urging Canadians to avoid travel to Karak, a town in central Jordan about 140 kilometres (87 miles) south of the capital.
