The Iraqi army says it has made progress in its advance toward the city of Mosul, Al-Alam News Network reports.
Footage from Monday broadcast by Rudaw, a Kurdish television channel, shows Iraqi army vehicles and soldiers positioned near Mosul, with plumes of black smoke billowing above.
Iraqi and Kurdish forces launched a multi-pronged offensive against the Islamic State (ISIS / Daesh / ISIL) terrorist group in Mosul on Monday, reclaiming about a dozen villages south and east of the city.
The battle for Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city and ISIS’s last urban bastion, is expected to take weeks or even months.
Kurdish forces said on Tuesday that they are pausing in their advance on Mosul after capturing a handful of villages, as the Iraqi army presses ahead with the next stage of the operation to retake the city.
