This is the strongest typhoon hitting Fujian Province since local meteorological records began in 1949. The winds shattered windows on high buildings and caused the disruption of water supplies to many communities in Xiamen.
The Xiamen Power Supply Co. said that the typhoon has severely damaged the power grid in Xiamen, causing a mass blackout. The electricity supply was also disrupted in Xiamen's outlying islands. Schools and nurseries in the coastal cities of Fuzhou, Xiamen, Zhangzhou, Quanzhou and Putian in Fujian were closed on Wednesday as a precaution.
The railway authorities in Nanchang, in Jiangxi Province, announced on Wednesday that as a precautionary measure they would cancel 144 trains scheduled to run between Wednesday and Saturday, Xinhua News Agency said.
The typhoon's arrival on Thursday coincided with China's Mid-Autumn Festival, a three-day public holiday.
