About 1,200 migrants arrived in the Sicilian port of Messina on Tuesday after being rescued off the Libyan coast the previous day; among them were numerous children and unaccompanied minors.
The Italian Coast Guard says a total of 6,500 people were rescued on 29 August in different operations involving the Italian Coast Guard, the Italian Navy and ships from the European Union Naval Force - Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR MED) as well as ships from non-profit organizations.
Italian Navy ship Virginio Fasan brought in Sicily the first group of migrants, mostly from Sub-Saharan Africa.
The rest of the migrants will be brought to different harbors in Italy in the coming days.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in 2016 a total of 266,026 migrants have arrived in Europe by sea and some 3,156 have died or gone missing in the attempt.
