Some 4,500 migrants were rescued in the Mediterranean on Tuesday as part of several separate operations coordinated by the Italian Coast Guard.
The migrants were rescued from rubber dinghies and a wooden boat, the Coast Guard said.
Video released by the Coast Guard shows more than 400 people being intercepted by the rescue ship Diciotti.
Other rescue operations were carried out by Italian navy ships, vessels working for the European Union border agency, Frontex, and NGOs.
