VIDEO: Shocking Moment of 6.5 Magnitude Powerful Earthquake in Japan

Thousands of people have been fleeing southern Japan after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck killing at least nine people and injuring nearly 900 hundred others.

The Footage shows powerful earthquakes battering Southwestern Japan, thousands are evacuated, Al-Alam News Network reports.

More than 44,400 people were evacuated from their homes in the hardest-hit town of Mashiki, Kumamoto Prefecture, after quakes struck the south-western island of Kyushu, leveled more than a dozen homes, sparked fires and trapped several people under collapsed buildings.

Gen Aoki, director of the Japan Meteorological Agency's earthquake division, warned more aftershocks could occur over the next week, causing an exodus from the area.

“The toll currently stands at nine dead,” said a disaster management official from the demolished Kumamoto prefecture.

Most victims were in town of Mashiki about 15 km (9 miles) east of the city of Kumamoto. The 44,400 people currently evacuated were staying at 500 shelters in the prefecture, The Japan Times reports.

Power was cut at 14,500 households in the prefecture, according to Kyushu Electric Power Co. Saibu Gas Co, with around 350 military personnel were dispatched to aid the rescue effort.
