Several rockets fired by militants fighting in Syria have hit the Bekaa Valley, landing in deserted areas, a Lebanese security source says.

The rockets fell between the outskirts of Ras Baalbek and Al-Qaa in the northern Bekaa Valley on Thursday, the source told The Daily Star newspaper, adding that the rockets were likely the result of heavy fighting from the Syrian side of the border.

This is the second time that rockets have landed in the Bekaa Valley this week.

Four rockets hit the northeastern city of Hermel Tuesday, wounding two soldiers.

The al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front in Lebanon and the Marwan Hadid Brigades jointly claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s attacks.

Syrian opposition groups have been firing rockets intermittently on the Bekaa Valley since the spring in retaliation for Hezbollah’s fighting alongside the Syrian army.
