The Syrian army on Thursday targeted militant strongholds in al-Mu'addamiyah Dariya, al-Qaboun, Khan al-Sheikh, and al-Husseiniya.

Clashes were also reported to have erupted between Syrian army forces and militants in the districts of Zamalka and al-Sharidi. No casualties have been reported so far.

On August 21, Syrian sources said army forces had attacked militants near Damascus.

Following the incident, foreign-backed militants and opposition activists accused the Syrian army of using chemical weapons in the attack.

The operations comes as the UNSC held closed door talks to discuss a recent chemical attack near capital.

Videos posted online showed lifeless bodies, mostly with no visible signs of injury which suggested chemical materials were used on people.

Takfiri militants, that Syria says have launched the attack on people, tried to put the blame on the Syrian army.

Supporters of the war against Syria, including Britain, France, Turkey, the Arab League and Saudi Arabia hastily responded to a report by the militants, calling on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to discuss the issue.

Syria vehemently rejected allegations that it used chemical weapons against Takfiri militants, saying the accusations were fabricated to distract the visiting team of the UN chemical weapons experts.

A UN team of chemical experts are in Syria, by the invitation of the Syrian government, to probe reports of use of chemical materials in the massive foreign-backed insurgency in Syria which started in 2011.
