A high-profile Syrian official has said that applying chemical weapons in Syria while the UN inspectors are still on the ground would be a “political suicide.”

“All analysts say that it is not in our current interest to use chemical weapons while the commission is on the ground,” a senior Syrian security official said on Thursday.

Wednesday "was the first day of the UN mission's work, and using chemical weapons at this time would have been political suicide," the source said on condition of anonymity.

Foreign-backed opposition forces in Syria blamed President Bashar al-Assad for killing some 1,300 people in chemical attacks on a terrorist stronghold in Damascus suburb.

The source said that the accusations leveled against the Syrian army are aimed at playing down the experts' effort and to muddy the waters.

"The army continues to advance in its efforts to end terrorism and we see no need to use such weapons. They (the opposition) are trying to cover up the army's successes with such lies," he added.

UN inspectors arrived in Damascus on Sunday with a mandate to investigate three sites for the alleged use of chemical weapons.

They are Khan al-Assal in the Northern Province of Aleppo, as well as Ataybeh near Damascus and Homs in central Syria.

UN officials said that Aake Sellstroem, the head of the UN team are in talks with the Syrian government over examining the alleged fresh chemical attacks.

Videos were aired on TV channels following the attacks purportedly showing victims of chemical attacks in an unspecified region.

International experts including western specialists alerted against “jumping to guns” and accusing the Syrian government for the attacks before launching a full investigation into the issue.
