A group of protesters have staged a sit-in outside Egyptian embassy in Damascus to oppose President Mohammad Morsi’s decision to cut diplomatic ties with Syria.

The Sunday protest in Damascus came as hundreds of thousands of anti-Morsi demonstrators swarm into the streets in Cairo and other cities calling on the president to stand down.

The protesters in Damascus stressed unity among the two Syrian and Egyptian nations and reconfirmed their hostility towards the Zionist regime (of Israel).

“Abdel Nasser said one day that there was no room for Brotherhood,” a message fixed on the wall of the embassy read, referring to the popular Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s statement. The second Egyptian President, Nasser took office in 1956 and died in 1970.

“Long live Arab Egypt and down with Egypt of Brotherhood,” read another peice of paper on the embassy wall.

The protesters also blasted the efforts to divide the two great nations and called for the ouster of the ruling Egyptian system backed by Muslim Brotherhood and blamed the group for fomenting the recent unrest in Egypt.

Addressing a rally in mid-June in Cairo, Morsi told his supporters that Egypt would sever ties with Syria.
