Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz has conveyed his congratulation to president-elect Hassan Rohani after the 65-year old cleric took lead from his rivals to win Friday’s much-awaited presidential election.
“We were delighted by your victory in the presidential elections and in the name of the Saudi government and nation, I would send you best wishes and congratulation and pray for prosperity, progress and welfare of the Iranian nation,” the Saudi King relayed in his message on Sunday.
Abdullah also thanked Rohani for his conciliatory remarks during his campaign to beef up cooperation and strengthen ties between the two brother nations.
The President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan also sent a congratulatory message to Rohani.
"We felicitate you on winning the presidential election ... and wish you and the Iranian people further progress and prosperity,” said the UAE president, adding, “We look forward to working with you for the good of the region and the peoples of the UAE and Iran. We are keen on maintaining relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran that are based on cooperation.”
Leaders of Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait also sent similar letters to Iran’s president-elect.
Rohani won Iran’s 11th presidential election by securing 18,613,329 votes, or 50.70 percent, of a total of 36,704,156 ballots counted.
Rohani currently represents Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in the country’s Supreme National Security Council, is a member of the Expediency Council and the Assembly of Experts, and is also president of the Expediency Council's Center for Strategic Research.
