Israeli journalist Ehud Yaari says following recent changes in the country the condition is now in favor of the Syrian government.
“Syrian army has made tactical achievements in the eastern parts of Damascus, al-Qusayr, Homs province and southern areas and these advancements can alter the results of the conflict,” he told Israeli Channel 2.
Yaari said currently armed groups do not have the ability to launch new attacks against the Syrian army and “until they are not equipped with new advanced arms they can’t get more areas under control”.
United States and its western allies have also shown signs of worries about Syrian government advancements against the terrorists which have enjoyed western support for more than two years.
On Tuesday, pushed by Britain and France, European Union decided to open the way for arming militants in Syria, a move which is not only against international regulations but also is against EU rules as well.
The EU move was responded with widespread criticism from Russia, which has been trying to bring Syrian government and opposition side to sit for dialogue, saying that it dimmed hopes of reaching a political solution to end the war.
Western countries have already been supplying insurgents with what they call “non-lethal” equipment but the new decision marks a turning point in EU's support of the militants.
Extremist groups have swelled the ranks of insurgents in Syria and EU’s decision to arm them is expected to lead to further insecurity which may come to haunt the West on their own doorsteps.
