Several Israeli warplanes have violated Lebanon’s airspace in a provocative move after launching an aggressive airstrike on a research center near the Syrian capital, Damascus, posing more threats to the security of the region.

Al-Alam correspondent reported on Sunday the warplanes flew at a low level over the Lebanese capital, Beirut, and its suburbs for several hours.

Recent attacks on Syria and flights of Israeli warplanes over Lebanon have raised fears of suspected Israeli plans to heighten tensions in the region which would lead to war.

Lebanese caretaker foreign minister Adnan Mansour said Saturday that the Zionist regime’s ongoing violations of Lebanese airspace brought more tension into the region and urged the international community to help end such breaches from taking place in the future.

“Such attacks will result in more tension and it will not provide Israel with the security and peace it wants in its own way but will push the region toward more conflicts and lead it to the unknown,” said Mansour in a statement.

“Such attacks place the international community in front of its responsibilities and requires it to compel Israel to respect international resolutions, particularly [United Nations Resolution] 1701,” said Mansour.

The Zionist regime’s incursions of Lebanese sovereignty have a long history with the regime’s planes and drones frequently breaching Lebanese airspace.

The Lebanese government, the Hezbollah resistance movement, and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), have repeatedly condemned the overflights, saying they are in clear violation of UN Resolution 1701 and the country's sovereignty.

UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which brokered a ceasefire in the war of aggression the Zionist regime launched against Lebanon in 2006, calls on the regime to respect Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In 2009, Lebanon filed a complaint with the United Nations, presenting over 7,000 documents pertaining to Israeli violations of Lebanese territory.
