“Inciting religious rifts in the Muslim world is a colonialist scheme aimed at ensuring the safety of the Zionist regime [of Israel],” Larijani said.
He made the remarks in a meeting with a number of Egyptian political elite, academicians and journalists in Tehran on Saturday, Press TV reported.
He said that there was no division in principles among Islamic sects, adding that colonialist powers seek to take advantage of extremist terrorist groups to consolidate their domination over the Muslim world.
He also praised the Egyptian revolution as an influential one in the region and said the Islamic Republic of Iran has always thrown its weight behind the revolutionary movement of the Egyptian people and will stand by them.
Highlighting deep-rooted bonds between the Iranian and Egyptian nations, Larijani said that, enemies of Muslims, having realized the significance of friendly ties between Tehran and Cairo, seek to drive a wedge between the two countries through Iranophobia plots as well as religious rifts.
In the meeting, the Egyptian scholars also highlighted Tehran and Cairo’s instrumental roles in the region and urged further development of bilateral relations.
