Dangerous wind chills of 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit (-6.67 to -1.11 Celsius) below in parts of the region will make for some crippling conditions on Friday.
Forecasters said a storm will follow the frigid weather, bringing chances for snow, sleet and freezing rain across much of the country.
In upstate New York, along the Lake Ontario shore, wind gusts approached 70 miles per hour (112.7 kilometers per hour) and the National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning effective through early on Friday morning.
Lake-effect snow was accompanied by winds of up to 50 miles per hour (80.47 kilometers per hour), causing whiteout conditions in some places.
Drivers said the weather made their commutes much longer than usual.
