VIDEO: 40 Killed, 100 Injured in Iran’s Train Crash

Ali Yahyaei, Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) in Semnan Province told Iran official news agency IRNA that at least 40 people are estimated to have lost their lives, putting the number of the injured at around 100.

The collision of two passenger trains at Haf-Khan Station in Iran’s north-central province of Semnan near the city of Shahroud happened early morning on Friday and 40 people have lost their lives and dozens of others have been injured.

Semnan Governor Mohammad-Reza Khabbaz said 31 dead bodies have so far been recovered, adding that the death toll is expected to rise further, Press TV reported.

According to Mostafa Mortazavi, the spokesman of the Relief and Rescue Organization of Iran’s Red Crescent Society, Snowfalls and icy roads causes difficulty for access to the site of the incident; although Ambulences , at least 7 Rescue Team and a rescue helicopter has been sent shortly after accident.

A huge fire also broke out following the accident, further slowing down relief operations underway at the location.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collision.
