People escaping from Islamic State (ISIS / Daesh / ISIL / IS) group-held areas near Mosul have continued to arrive at a makeshift camp about 8 miles (12 kilometres) southeast of the city on Friday.
Around 200 people are currently camping out in the desert at Omer Qamchi waiting to be moved to official camps. Most families arrived on Thursday morning and were forced to spend the night in the desert when they were barred from moving on to the official camps nearby, where they now hope to be let in on Friday; AP reported.
Among the new arrivals at the makeshift camp on Friday morning were Abaf and Turkia and their daughter Adir, who fled a village around 1.9 miles (3 kilometres) away from Mosul. Escaping under the cover of night, they spent eight days making the perilous journey through IS group-held territory to the camp.
Abaf said they left their village after IS (ISIS / Daesh / ISIL) group militants threatened to take them to Mosul to be used as human shields. As residents continue to flee, the effort to retake Mosul from IS group militants grinds on.
