The troops, from 109 Artillery Battalion, were acting on information gained from aerial surveillance operations conducted by both US and Iraqi planes. The battalion fired several rounds of 155 millimeter shells into villages around Mosul that civilians have already abandoned, according to the Iraqi army.
Sergeant Ali Nasrieh, Iraqi Army 109 Artillery Battalion said, "We have no problems. Our military units are under control, morale is high, we will crush the enemy and terrorism, and there will be no more Daesh (ISIS) in Iraq.
The shelling of ISIS targets in the area has continued for about 15 days, at a pace of 30 to 40 rounds per day, the army said.
