ISIS ransacked and bulldozed the centuries-old archaeological site of Nimrud in northern Iraq, in what the head of the U.N.’s cultural agency decried as a “cultural cleansing” that amounted to a “war crime.”
Troops from the Iraqi army’s 9th armoured division announced that they had liberated Nimrud. They were expected to check the archaeological site for mines and booby traps before opening it to experts to inspect the damage. But satellite photographs confirmed the worst fears of many about the destruction of the ziggurat, which dated back 2,900 years. The pictures showed that the step pyramid which was Nimrud’s main temple and towered over the surrounding desert, was bulldozed as recently as September.
