Members of the Iraqi Federal Police distributed food aid on Thursday to hundreds of displaced families who fled their homes to find refuge in the town of Hammam al-Alil, south of the city of Mosul.
Displaced people, mostly women and children, gathered near trucks containing food aid as members of Iraqi police distributed aid boxes to them.
Hammam al-Alil was seized from Islamic State (ISIS / Daesh / ISIL) by Iraqi Federal Police units last week as Iraqi government forces, Kurdish peshmerga and Shia militias backed by United States-led air strikes pushed their offensive to recapture Mosul from Islamic State.
The United Nations has warned of a possible exodus of hundreds of thousands of refugees.
Mosul is still home to up to 1.5 million people. So far at least 34,000 have been displaced, the International Organization for Migration says.
