The Kurdish Peshmerga have requested to the United Kingdom for protection from potential ISIS chemical attacks before their operation to liberate Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq.
The Peshmerga, the Iraqi army and pro-government militia forces are making final preparations to liberate the city with the operation to begin in the coming weeks.
In a letter to Defence Secretary Michael Fallon seen by the Guardian, the Kurdish high representative in the UK, Karwan Jamal Tahir, requested specialized equipment to help counteract the effects of chemical weapons, which he claimed had been used against Kurdish forces on 19 separate occasions by ISIS.
Anodolu News Agency reported that Hayas Surji, a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, said on Monday that ISIS was transferring chemical weapons from Syria into Mosul in anticipation of an assault on the city.
