Demonstrators in Srinagar hurled stones and wooden planks at Indian police while officers responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.

A young man was killed and several others were injured in the clashes between protesters and Indian government forces.

Police said the man was killed when security forces fired at protesters Wednesday in northern Nadihal village.

Despite the lifting of the curfew, shops and schools remained closed because of a protest strike called by separatists challenging India’s sovereignty over Kashmir.

The curfew, a series of communication blackouts and a tightening crackdown have failed to stop some of the largest protests against Indian rule in recent years, triggered by the killing of a popular rebel commander on 8 July.
