On Tuesday, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the arrival of several fighter jets at the Iranian Hamedan Airbase; these air assets are expected to be used in eastern Syria.
The Russian Air Force’s Su-34s began their large-scale bombing campaign over the vast Syrian Desert on Wednesday, targeting the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS , ISIL , IS and Daesh) in the provinces of Homs and Deir Ezzor.
Among the many targets for the Russian Air Force on Wednesday was the ISIS-controlled Arak Gas Fields that are situated to the northeast of Palmyra (Tadmur) city, Al Masdar News reports.
In addition to the airstrikes over the Palmyra countryside, the Russians also struck an Islamic State training camp in the Deir Ezzor Governorate, killing a large number of terrorists in the process.
While the Russian Air Force hammers ISIS in east Syria, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their Iraqi allies are preparing for a large-scale offensive to lift the 17 month-long siege on the Deir Ezzor Governorate.
No date has been announced for this Syrian Arab Army offensive; however, it is expected to begin soon.
