Following his release from an Egyptian prison in 2012, Mabrouk made his way to Syria in order to join the newest Al-Qaeda franchise: Jabhat Al-Nusra, Al-Masdar News reports.
Mabrouk is a key member of Joulani’s inner-circle and a former confidant of Al-Qaeda’s leader Aymen Zawahiri – both born in Egypt.
Jabhat Al-Nusra has been given Al-Qaeda’s blessing to breakaway from the latter; furthermore, they will remain close allies, despite the fact they are no longer flying under the same banner.
