The site is located close to the shrine of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, the first Shia Imam.
As a result nearly all Iraq's Shia Muslim population request to be buried there.
Daily burials have occurred at Wadi Al-Salaam for more than 1,400 years and an estimated 500,000 additional bodies are buried there every year.
"The fact that the cemetery is also home to many prophets, kings, princes and Sultans, also played a part in it being selected, according to the UNESCO website."
As a result, the Najaf ancient graveyard is regularly visited by millions of Muslims living in various parts of the world.
The cemetery is on the Tentative List of UNESCO's World Heritage site for its age - people have been buried there since before the Middle Ages - and of course its size.
The drone footage captures Wadi Al-Salaam, which translates as Valley of Peace, from a height, but it is still unable to film anything but the graveyard.
Headstones and tombs emerge from the ground for as far as the eye can see as people - the size of ants - negotiate between them to pay their respects.
Vehicles travel along roads connecting the endless rows upon rows of graves before the video concludes with one last shot overlooking the vast area below.
