Fighter jets on the US aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower have begun carrying out airstrikes against the Islamic State (ISIS / Daesh / ISIL) terrorist group in Syria and Iraq from the Mediterranean Sea.
“Russian naval forces operate in the eastern Meditarranean just like we do. These are international waters, they have just as much right to be here as we do. We have an agreement with the Russians on how to operate safely at sea, it's called the 'Inc. Sea agreement'. We adhere to that, they adhere to it. But every now and then there may be a situation where a certain platform maybe demonstrating some seamanship on the high seas, that may be assessed as unprofessional. And recently we saw some of that and we reported it, and since then we have not seen that again,” said Jesse A. Wilson, US Navy Rear Admiral and Commander.
The jets on the Eisenhower, also known as the ‘Ike’, conducted their first strikes last week, on June 28.
