The Syrians must decide their own fate by themselves without any interference from outside, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during the talks with a Syrian opposition politician, Ahmad Jarba in Moscow on Monday, Al-Alam News Network reports.
Jarba, who is the leader of a moderate opposition block, Syria’s Tomorrow, is visiting Moscow to discuss Syria including the end of hostilities and humanitarian issues with the Russian officials.
Lavrov said Russia was ready to work on resolving the Syrian crisis. "We know you, Mr. Jarba as a true patriot of your country and we're confident that you're sincerely interested in stopping the bloodshed as soon as possible as well as in full implementation of all U.N. Security Council's resolutions based upon consensus reached by the International Syria Support Group," Lavrov said opening talks in Moscow.
Jarba said that the issue of fighting militancy in Syria would be one of the topics for talks in Moscow along with the issues of resuming the ceasefire and tackling the humanitarian crisis.
"Of course we will discuss the issue of fight against terrorism. Russia is playing the main part in countering terrorism. As you know, our country has suffered significant losses due to terrorism and today we expect to discuss our cooperation in this sphere," Jarba said.
Russia deployed warplanes to Syria last year to support President Bashar al-Assad against terrorists seeking to end his rule.
