Police were patrolling Cidade de Deus (City of God) shantytown in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, after a violent night there that left one person injured.

According to local media, criminals attacked a Pacifying Police Unit (UPP) in reprisal for the death of a woman, reportedly the relative of a drug trafficker.

The criminals burned tires and blocked some streets to prevent the police entering the favela, located just a few kilometers away from the Olympic Park that will host the Games in August.

One resident was shot and taken to the hospital where he is under medical care.

Some schools were closed and most businesses in the area were not opened on Friday morning.

It is the second attack against the police in less than one week.

Last Saturday Rio’s authorities said gunmen opened fire on a police station and then torched two buses in the city’s bohemian Santa Teresa neighborhood.
