According to a request made by New Delhi late last year, Russian authorities are ready to sell five S-400 Triumph anti-aircraft missile systems to India, Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) says.

“The Federal Service has prepared a draft intergovernmental agreement on the supply of the S-400 systems to India and passed it to our partners, so we are awaiting a response,” said the FSMTC deputy director Vladimir Drozhzhov on the sidelines of the Defexpo India 2016 exhibition on Tuesday, TASS news agency reported.

On December 17, India’s Defense Acquisition Council, the highest procurement body under the Ministry of Defense, said that the New Delhi government had approved the purchase of the Russian-built S-400 missile defense systems.

The cost of the contract has not been officially disclosed but according to media outlets it might reach about $6 billion, the report added.

India intends to use these missiles to fill a gap in its defense capabilities against ballistic missiles and stealth aircraft.

The S-400 surface-to-air missiles have a range of about 400 kilometers and can destroy tactical and strategic aircraft as well as ballistic and cruise missiles. Their digital target acquisition system and radar allow simultaneous detection and hitting several different targets.

The Defexpo India 2016 international exhibition is held in Quitol in the state of Goa in India from March 28 to 31, Press TV reported.
