Call for Syria Assad’s Resignation Unacceptable, Illegal: Russia

While the US and its allies as well as some foreign-backed Syrian opposition groups are occasionally demanding for resignation of Bashar Assad as President of Syria, Maria Zakharova, Spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry called such demand unacceptable and illegal.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Zakharova said such demand has been repeatedly heard from Western officials, adding that they believed such insistence for resignation of heads of state is unacceptable.

She said that non-interference in domestic affairs of other countries has been emphatically stipulated in the UN Charter.

The spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry said so far none of the scenarios for change of the regimes the region has produced a positive result, adding that such scenarios are baseless and unreasonable.

Zakharova further remarked that Russia has repeatedly announced that no one is authorized to determine the fate of the Syrian president from the outside, noting that Bashar Assad’s fate is only determined by the Syrian nation.

The US and Western officials have repeatedly called for resignation of Bashar Assad as President of Syria and in their call have paid no attention to the positions and demands of the Syrian people.

In a recent interview with Euronews, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev referred to the widespread support of the Syrian people for president of Syria and said Bashar Assad as the national leader should participate in all the political processes of Syria and only the people of that country are authorized to determine the fate of their president, IRNA reported.
