US and local authorities are trying to find a group of Americans reported missing in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, a US official said Sunday.

"We are aware of reports that American citizens are missing in Iraq. We are working with the full cooperation of the Iraqi authorities to locate and recover the individuals," the official said, AFP reported.

The U.S. Embassy confirmed Sunday that "several" Americans have gone missing in Iraq, after local media reported that three Americans had been kidnapped in the Iraqi capital.

State Department spokesman John Kirby said that "due to privacy considerations" he had nothing further to add about the missing Americans. "The safety and security of Americans abroad is our highest priority," Kirby said.

Meanwhile it is reported that three American contractors went missing in Iraq two days ago, said a senior security official in Baghdad.

"A company filed a report Sunday about three of its staff going missing two days ago. They are American contractors. We are looking into this report," the official told CNN.

Separately, an Iraqi security official with knowledge of the case said that two of three missing contractors are dual Iraqi-American citizens, and that the third is an American national.
