A Saudi actor has been arrested after a group of women took selfies with him.

Abdul Aziz Al Kassar was mobbed by the women who wanted to take pictures with him in a shopping mall.

The actor, who lives in Kuwait, had arrived in Saudi Arabia for work.

He was arrested by members of the country's religious police - Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the prevention of Vice -during the mobbing.

He was accused of upsetting public order, mixing with women who are not related to him and abusing social media.

Mr Al Kassar informed his followers on Snapchat that he would be at the shopping mall.

But the shocked actor said he was not expecting to find so many people waiting for him upon arrival.

He said: "I asked my followers on Snapchat about the best mall to visit and they recommended Al Nakheel, so I took up their suggestion and said on social media that I was going there on Friday.

"I want to clarify that the presence of young women at the mall was not something under my control.

"When I stepped in, several fans came over and surrounded me until someone came over and pulled me aside into a room that I learned was reserved for the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice inside the mall.

"I understood that the man who pulled me was a member of the commission and I did not resist him out of my respect for the commission."

Mr Al Kassar said officials should have warned him about the large number of fans waiting for him at the mall.

He added: "They did not tell me to stay away and that not meeting them was better.

"They initially took away my mobile, but returned it to me."

The actor is currently waiting in Saudi Arabia for the investigation to be concluded and has been released on bail.
