US Republican Senator John McCain says President Barack Obama is to blame for Russia bolstering its military presence in Syria.
Russia’s assistance to the Syrian government is "yet another example of how this administration’s feckless foreign policy has emboldened our adversaries and diminished our standing in the world," McCain said Monday in a statement.
Russia is "capitalizing on American inaction" and "engaged in a dangerous military buildup" in Syria, said the Arizona Republican, who is the chairman of the Armed Services Committee.
McCain, a vocal critic of the Obama administration's foreign policy especially with regard to Syria, made the comments after Russia asked the US to cooperate on military efforts inside Syria to avoid "unintended consequences."
Russia has, in recent months, sent military personnel and equipment, including tanks and aircraft, to Syria to help the government of Bashar al-Assad fight against the Daesh Takfiri terrorists.
Moscow has stationed about seven T-90 tanks at the Syrian airfield near Latakia, and it has been increasing the number of its military flights to the same airfield, US officials said.
Also, seven Russian Antonov An-124 military transport aircraft have taken off from a base in Russia during the past week to transport equipment to Syria.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that Moscow “will continue” to send military supplies to Syria.
The US and Russia have been at odds in recent months over the crises in both Syria and Ukraine.
The US has been training and arming “moderate” militants supposedly to fight the Daesh terrorists, but analysts say they will end up battling against the Syrian government; Press TV reported.
