According to the union president Said Iqbal, the march took place in response to the threat of massive layoffs due to the declining purchasing power and the weakening of the rupiah against the US dollar.

Members of the Indonesian Labor Movement held a rally in Jakarta on Tuesday. Thousands of workers gathered at the "Horse Statue" roundabout before participating in a march to the presidential palace.

During the protest members of the Indonesian Labor Movement urged the government to take concrete steps to deliver some of their demands to stabilize the rupiah and the price of basic goods.

The protests took place across twenty provinces in Indonesia.
