Secretary General of the Lebanese Hezbollah Resistance Movement Seyed Hassan Nasrallah has renewed his support for Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun's candidacy in the Lebanese presidency.
“We are keen to highlight today that there is no change in our position,” Nasrallah said during a meeting to mark the opening of a new university in Beirut's southern suburbs, according to a Daily Star report.
“General Aoun is a natural candidate and is a strong candidate and has broad-based representation,” Nasrallah said. “We were and we are still, and will continue to support (Aoun’s) nomination."
Quoted in a Wednesday statement by Hezbollah’s press office, Nasrallah said Aoun is a "mandatory passage" for the presidential election to take place, adding that Hezbollah has a strong commitment to this principle.
Lebanon has been without a president since former Lebanese President Michel Suleiman’s term in office ended on May 2014. Lebanon’s parliament has been unable to come to a consensus on a successor, with the Hezbollah-led-March 8 Alliance backing Michel Aoun and the Future Movement-led-March 14 Alliance throwing its weight behind Samir Geagea.
