Earlier in the day, Saudi Arabia said it had shot down a Scud tactical ballistic missile fired into the kingdom by the Houthi forces from Yemen.

"The attack was planned and carried out by the Yemeni Republican Guard, and Houthis," Al-Manar reported, citing a Saudi-led coalition’s statement.

Two missiles launched from a Patriot missile battery shot down the Scud around the south-western Saudi city of Khamis Mushait, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.

Khamis Mushait is home to the King Khalid Air Base, the largest such facility in that part of the country.

Saudis on social media reported hearing air raid sirens go off around the city during the attack.

Meanwhile Yemen's Army Spokesman Sharaf Luqman made the announcement on Friday, saying that the Yemeni soldiers, backed by popular fighters, inflicted major losses on Saudi troops at border areas and captured several border guards.

Saudi Arabia has been bombing Yemen in the last 73 days to bring its ally, fugitive president Mansour Hadi, back to power.

The airstrikes have so far claimed the lives of more than 4,240 civilians, mostly women and children.

According to a recent report by Freedom House Foundation, most of the victims of the deadly Al Saud campaign are civilians, including a large number of women and children.
