Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday that Russian and US positions on Syria are getting closer, but that Moscow would not condone supporting opposition forces there. Lavrov said supporting the armed Syrian opposition was short-sighted.
Sergey Lavrov added, "I think our positions (on Syria) with the United States are getting close, first of all, in regard to statements that there can be no alternative to a political solution in Syria on the basis of the Geneva communique of June 2012. However, we don't support Washington's position that at the same time allows, and even implies, the building up of support of the armed opposition."
UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Nahyan said, "The Middle East region is experiencing a tough period, which is characterized by the spread of a terrorist threat. So we can't just wait until it ends. We need to seriously look for the terrorist threat in the environment where it is being formed. I'm talking about the political, economic, cultural and other problems, which the countries of the region face."
