Afghan President Ashraf Ghani underlined the importance of his country's ties with Iran, saying that the potentials of the two neighboring countries should be utilized to further promote bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the region.

"Relations between Iran and Afghanistan are historical and long-lasting and have various dimensions," Ghani said Sunday at a joint press conference with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani here in Tehran.

He urged that "a new chapter" should be opened in the bilateral ties and opportunities should be seized to boost mutual and regional cooperation between Tehran and Kabul.

"Today, we are facing the serious threat posed by various forms of terrorism," he stated, noting that the Afghan people are facing terror and barbarism and fall victim to terrorism every day.

"However, the Afghan nation's determination (to stand up against terrorism) is strong," he underscored.

Ghani and his accompanying delegation arrived in Tehran on Sunday morning for talks on regional and international issues as well as enhancement of bilateral ties.
