“Islamist fighters” on Monday kidnapped some 300 Kurdish civilians at a checkpoint in northwestern Syria, Kurdish officials and a local journalist told AFP.

Officials in Europe with the main Kurdish party in Syria, the Democratic Union Party, said the Kurds were kidnapped as they travelled from the town of Afrin to the nearby city of Aleppo to collect salaries.

A journalist from Afrin confirmed the kidnapping, saying that the “Islamists” had taken the men and children in the group but freed the women.
