Iran has condemned the terrorist attack carried out on Tunisia’s leading museum in the country's capital, Tunis, which led to the deaths of at least 19 people.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham voiced Tehran’s condemnation for the assault and said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran has always warned about the dangers posed by the anti-human phenomenon of terrorism and its development.”

The shooting attack in Tunis was carried out against Bardo Museum, which is located less than 150 meters (500 feet) from the parliament, also known as Assemblee Nationale (National Assembly), on Wednesday. Seventeen foreigners and two Tunisians were among the fatalities.

The Iranian official also hoped for the success of Tunisia’s new government and voiced the Islamic Republic’s support for the establishment of stability and security in the country -- the birthplace of the popular uprisings in the Arab world, which witnessed the ouster of Tunisia’s long-time dictator, Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, in 2011.

On Wednesday, Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid said Polish, Italian, Spanish, German and Tunisian citizens are among those killed, adding that there were up to five attackers involved in the assault. He noted that 22 tourists and two Tunisians were injured during the incident.

Essid also stated that Tunisia’s government has taken measures to prevent any new attacks after the Wednesday assault.

He described the attack as a “horrible crime” and said he had assured the wounded of “our support, our sympathy and our regrets that such a thing has happened.”
