Battled-hardened Chadian troops in heavily armed pick-up trucks scour the bush in northern Nigeria, the scene of regular attacks by the Nigerian terrorists group Boko Haram in recent months.

It's where Chad said it killed 207 Boko Haram militants in fighting on Tuesday (February 24) and where the Chadian military seized large quantities of small arms and ammunition and two pick-up trucks.

One Chadian soldier was killed and another nine were wounded in the clashes near Gambaru.

Niger, Cameroon and Chad have launched a regional military campaign to help Nigeria defeat the Boko Haram insurgency, which aims to carve an “Islamic emirate” out of northeastern Nigeria.

Nigeria has come under criticism of not doing enough to drive Boko Haram out of its northern territories.

But Chad's unilateral intervention on Nigerian soil - ahead of the launch of an 8,700-strong regional taskforce to tackle Boko Haram - appears to forced Nigeria's hand into tackling the Sunni terrorists group.

The Chadian army's morale is high, and the determination is there to drive Boko Haram out.

"It belongs to Boko Haram. The Chadian army took it from Boko Haram," said the Chadian army spokesman Agouna Azem Bermandoa, referring to the tank a Chadian General and other soldiers watched driving past.

Standing before a cache of dozens of weapons, pick-up trucks and motorcycles captured from Boko Haram, Bermandoa said two prisoners, had been brought to the base, one, and nicknamed "The Butcher", having been accused of beheading or slashing the throats of five people.

Chad says it has had no contact with Nigerian forces on the ground and that they never fought alongside them.

Boko Haram killed an estimated 10,000 people last year in its fight to carve out an “Islamist emirate” in Africa's largest oil producer.
