U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday that he and his Iranian counterpart would seek at their upcoming meeting to lay the ground for negotiations on Tehran's nuclear programme to make greater progress.

With only six weeks before the next deadline in the negotiations, Secretary of State John Kerry will meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Wednesday in the Swiss capital. The U.S. and Iranian negotiating teams will meet Thursday through Saturday, and on Sunday diplomats from all seven countries involved in the negotiations will hold a final session, Tribune News Service reports.

"The meeting is calculated to take stock, number one, and to provide direction to our teams, number two, and to hopefully be able to accelerate the process to make greater progress," Kerry told reporters on a visit to India, Reuters reports.

US Secretary of State John Kerry will meet with Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in Geneva on January 14 ahead of the next round of talks on Iran's nuclear program, a US official confirmed Friday, AFP reports.

The two foreign ministers will discuss "guidance for the negotiating teams" which will meet in the Swiss city from January 18 seeking to reach a deal before the end of June, a senior State Department official said.

Later, a top member of Iranian nuclear negotiation team said that Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif's consultations with US secretary of state are scheduled for Jan 14 in Geneva and with Russian deputy foreign minister on Jan 12 in Tehran, IRNA reports.

Seyyed Abbas Araqchi said that those two rounds of bilateral consultations will be prior to the upcoming round of bilateral and multilateral the Iran-Sextet (UNSC Big 5 plus Germany) nuclear talks in Geneva.

The negotiations were extended twice last year, after the two sides failed to meet deadlines for reaching a deal on Iran’s nuclear development activities. But Iranian President Hassan Rowhani appeared to signal last week its interest in reaching a deal.
